Only Six weeks to go before I head out west to start my trip. Working hard in the gym but not getting the road work in. The indoor cycling is not the same. I need to get out on the road even if it is cold and wet!!

First day on the bike since Arizona

I rode 20 miles on the Eliza Furnace trail in Pittsburgh today. It was the first time the weather has cooperated since I have been back. Temperature was in the mid-50's when I started and eventually got up to 62 but it was sunny. I rode over to the North Shore and around the stadiums. A lot of school kids in town today for some reason or another. I was checking out a new bike seat I bought but I don't like it so it is going back to REI.

54 days to go before the ride starts

This ride will take 52 days and will start in San Francisco on June 6th and end in Portsmouth NH after 3,800 miles of riding. I will update this blog daily with the day's highlights once the ride starts. In the meantime, I will update periodically with the details of my preparation mainly to get practice with the blog. I hope everybody enjoys it.

I did a 45 minute hard workout on the spinning bike this morning. Tomorrow, I am going to ride on the bike trail down in Pittsburgh. Hope to get about 25 miles in.

I have been getting my gear together for the ride. My new rain suit arrived today. I put a new saddle on the bike today and will see if I like it better than the old one. I am going to start riding with all of the gear I expect to carry on the trip to get used to carrying the load. If you call about 3 pounds of stuff a load.Ha!

Countdown begins

There are only seven weeks to go before I begin my Bike ride across the United States. I been training for this event since January 1. I have been going to the gym at least 3 times a week doing strength training and endurance conditioning. I was able to bike 320 miles during the month of March while I was in Tucson Arizona including a 20 mile climb up Mt lemmon. Since I have been back home, I have been religiously going to the gym and using the spinning cycle at the gym, however, I have not been riding due to the cold weather since we have been back. I have resolved to start riding this week regardless of the temperatures. I need to get at least 750 miles in before June.
